Topwater fishing is regarded by many anglers as the most exciting way to catch fish. The thrill of seeing the strike on the surface can make an angler’s heart momentarily stop. Below are some hacks for various types of topwater lures.
Change the Hooks
Changing to sharper hooks is a good idea with topwater lures due to the high number of missed strikes. Changing the size of the hooks can also be useful. Use a larger hook on at the front of the lure to make the head sit lower in the water. Use a larger hook at the rear of the lure to make it sit up with the head further out of the water.
Dress the Hook
Adding a feather or hair to the rear hook will add a bit of motion to a topwater lure that is paused on the surface. You can tie your own or purchase them ready to use.
Add a Split Ring
Adding a split ring to the eye of a topwater lure will give it move freedom to move side-to-side. This is especially useful with topwater lures that walk the dog. The split ring will allow these lures to move further to each side.
Shorten the Legs
Grass frogs usually have long strands of silicone for legs. These long legs can cause many missed strikes. Fish often strike the the legs and miss the hook in the body of the lure. Trimming the legs increases the likelihood of a fish grabbing the body of the lure. Trim them on an angle with the shortest portion at the side of the lure.
Add a Trailer
In other instances, you might want to increase the overall size and profile of a lure. This is where a soft plastic trailer can be useful. A trailer will cause more commotion on the surface of the water, which can attract more fish. Use a scented soft plastic trailer to increase the likelihood of a fish hitting again after a missed strike.
